Product Information

Crowned the ‘King of Male Ferns' for a reason, the outstanding ‘Cristata’ boasts luscious green leaves and is a proven UK garden performer.

Commonly known as the ‘Golden Male Fern’ or the 'Scaly Male Fern', the young fronds of this plant grow in a golden-green shade and remain consistent in colour throughout the warm summer months.

The elegant foliage of this bushy fern grows upright to arched, with crested and twisted tips adding extra interest. As a semi-evergreen variety, this plant will retain most of its foliage throughout the year, particularly when planted in warmer locations.

This an easy solution for adding natural décor to even the most awkward garden spaces, such as dark corners, woodland beds, and damp borders. Thrives in part or full shade in moist, well drained, and in most types of soil, including chalk, clay, and sand-based.

Ferns have become a real staple garden feature, drawing popularity from their ease to plant, grow, and maintain, while also looking full and impressive regardless of the season.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot.

Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure or pine mulch to enrich the soil if necessary, as ferns enjoy a rich, fertile soil.
  • When planting several ferns, arrange on the surface so you can see how they will look once maturing.
  • Individually knock out each plant from the containers. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the root ball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the root ball - the aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the crown of the fern above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Water in well from below the fronds to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Low maintenance and easy to grow, just feed and water ferns regularly from below the fronds until fully established.
  • Will require protection from frosts.
  • In spring, tidy and add a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant.

Pruning Advice:

  • Little pruning is needed and don't cut back ferns in the autumn - leave the fronds as protection for the crowns of the plants.
  • Prune old, dead por damaged fronds in the early spring, to help the new fronds to uncurl. By clearing away any debris, you will encourage good air circulation.
