Peony plants are exquisite perennial flowers that add elegance and beauty to any garden. Known for their large, showy blossoms and delightful fragrance they are perfect as cut flowers and make them a favourite among gardeners.

Peonies come in a variety of types, including herbaceous, tree, and intersectional (Itoh) peonies. Consider factors like flower colour, bloom time, and plant size when selecting your peony variety. Our favourites include the classic Sarah Bernhardt and the stunning Bowl of Beauty.

Planting Peonies

Peonies thrive in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. They prefer a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight per day. When selecting a spot, make sure it offers adequate air circulation to prevent fungal diseases. It's important to note that peonies are long-lived perennials, so choose a location where they can remain undisturbed for many years.

The best time to plant peonies is in the autumn, typically in September or October. Planting then allows the roots to establish themselves before the arrival of winter, promoting healthy growth and abundant blooms in the following spring. Tree peonies, however, can also be planted in the spring, just after the last frost.

Dig a hole that is about 2 feet wide and 2 feet deep, ensuring there is enough space for the plant's root system to spread comfortably.

Incorporate a quality compost into the soil to improve drainage and fertility.

Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the roots. Avoid burying the eyes too deeply, as this can inhibit flowering.

Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

What are Tree Peonies?

Tree peonies are a unique and enchanting variety of peonies. Unlike herbaceous peonies, tree peonies have woody stems and retain their structure throughout the year. When planting tree peonies, it's important to note that they prefer a location with partial shade to protect their delicate blooms from intense sunlight. They also require well-drained soil and benefit from the addition of organic matter during planting.

In addition to their beauty, peonies offer several benefits that make them a valuable addition to any garden:

Longevity: Peonies are long-lived perennials that can thrive for decades with proper care. Once established, they reward you with years of stunning blooms.

Low Maintenance: Peonies are relatively low-maintenance plants. They require minimal pruning and are generally resistant to pests and diseases.

Fragrance and Beauty: The large, fragrant blossoms of peonies are a delight for the senses. They come in a variety of colours, including shades of pink, white, red, and yellow, adding a touch of elegance to your garden.

Cut Flowers: Peonies make exceptional cut flowers. Their blooms are long-lasting and can be enjoyed indoors as stunning floral arrangements.
