Product Information

A remarkable collection of six different hardy ferns, ready to provide excellent beauty and interest in any garden throughout the year.

The elegant foliage of these ferns forms into neat clumps to offer excellent ground coverage, in remarkable shades including green, silver, purple, and red.

Ferns are fantastic problem-solvers for gardeners of all abilities looking for evergreen beauties, as they are so easy to plant, grow, and maintain, while retaining a healthy look, regardless of the season.

Many of these hardy varieties are also ideal for adding natural décor to even the trickiest garden spaces, such as awkward corners, woodland beds, and damp borders.

This collection features six types of ferns, each boasting unique features, colours, and textures, and can either be planted throughout the garden for an impactful and uniform look, or en masse as part of a wider display.

All of these ferns even boast the coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, so you can be sure of their pedigree as proven garden performers, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardens. You can therefore plant these in confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Supplied as six plug plants, ready to be grown on, before planting out. Including one each of:

  • Asplenium scolopendrium – Commonly known as the ‘Hart’s Tongue Fern’, this plant displays green rosette foliage with ruffled and glossy crinkled fronds. Grows to H45cm x W45cm.
  • Athyrium niponicum Metallicum – Shimmering silvery fronds gracefully grow in arches on the ‘Japanese Painted Fern’. This variety produces a colour-changing show throughout the seasons, including shades of silver, purple, and red. Grows to H40cm x W120cm.
  • Dryopteris Cristata The King – An outstanding fern for natural green beauty. Young fronds grow in a golden green shade and remain consistent in colour throughout the summer months. Grows to H100cm x W100cm.
  • Dryopteris erythrosora Compact – Enjoy a show of airy and copper-pink fronds that soften to a light green as they age. Grows to H50cm x W50cm.
  • Polystichum tsus simense – Also known as the ‘Korean Rock Fern’, this compact and tufted evergreen fern boasts dark-veined and pointed fronds, which are tinted purple when young, before maturing to green. Grows to H50cm x W50cm.
  • Cyrtomium fortunei – Shuttlecock-shaped leathery and light green frond foliage grows across this semi-evergreen fern, which is easily recognisable for its distinctive black stems. Grows to H150cm x W100cm.

Top Tips

Don't be afraid to plant in dry shade, just make sure these are kept well-watered.

Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Unpack plugs immediately and stand them in water for an hour.
  • If you can’t do this, they can sit in their mini greenhouse for a week if upright and not too wet.
  • Plugs may be slightly dry or yellow after being in a dark box in the post, but they’ll quickly recover.
  • Put them somewhere warm, light and airy such as a windowsill or greenhouse.
  • When potting on, handle plugs carefully. Pot on using our 9cm pots in Shuttle Trays, using good multi-purpose compost.
  • Give your ferns a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Low maintenance and easy to grow, just feed and water ferns regularly from below the fronds until they are fully established.
  • Will require protection from frosts.
  • In spring, tidy and add a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant.

Pruning Advice:

  • Little pruning is needed and don't cut back ferns in the autumn - leave the fronds as protection for the crowns of the plants.
  • Clean up old, dead fronds in the early spring before the new fronds uncurl. Clear away any debris to encourage good air circulation.
