Description

This strange and fascinating member of the Iris family looks as though it would be at home in an aquarium! Growing from a small corm, flesh sword like leaves appear in early summer followed by the intricately beautiful fragrant flowers borne on 40cm stems.

As a half hardy plant Ferraria is best grown in a pot - it like good drainage so mix 30% coarse sand with your compost.  Flowers appear in spring and early summer after which the pot can be left to dry as bulbs become dormant. At the end of summer lift and replant - you'll find the bulbs multiply from year to year so you'll soon have a plentiful crop of this rare beauty!

Supplied as a set of three corms, ready to be potted.

Top Tips
After its flowering display, allow the foliage to die back naturally. During summer, keep the dormant corms warm and dry, then resume watering when fresh growth begins again ahead of the next growing season.
Care Information

How to plant:

For the most reliable results in the UK, grow them in deep pots with good drainage, using a peat-free, loam-based compost mixed with plenty of grit. Position somewhere bright, sunny and frost-free, such as a cool greenhouse, conservatory or similarly protected spot.

Watering:

Once growth begins, water moderately, keeping the compost lightly moist but never saturated. Good drainage is particularly important, as the corms dislike sitting in wet compost. As the foliage dies back and the plant enters its summer dormancy, stop watering and keep the corms dry until growth resumes.

Feeding:

While plants are actively growing, apply a balanced liquid fertiliser around once a month. Stop feeding when the foliage begins to die back and the corms enter dormancy.

Pruning and tidying:

No regular pruning is required. After flowering, allow the foliage to remain in place while it is green, as this helps replenish the corm for the following season. Once the leaves have naturally yellowed and died back, they can be removed.

Winter care:

Protect plants from frost and freezing temperatures throughout winter. Container-grown corms are best kept in a bright, frost-free greenhouse or conservatory, with moderate watering while actively growing.

Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
