Description

Bring a thrilling show of two-tone Salvia to your garden, ready to impress across many months! And with a name like ‘Hot Lips’, the colour of the many scarlet and white flowers should come as no surprise. Enjoy a flowering show from early summer to October’s first frosts, stretching up to around five months.

Slightly unusual and hardy, this perennial will make an impression across the garden, whether grown in a decorative patio pot or flowering border. This Salvia is easy to care for and flowers prolifically with just minimal care needed – ideal even for beginner growers!

It is winter hardy and will die back underground in autumn only to emerge bigger and better each spring. Plus, the colour tones change depending on the summer conditions, with cooler weather promoting the white and warmer days developing the blazing red.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Plus, this variety is loved by bees and other beneficial insects, even being labelled by the RHS as a ‘Plant for Pollinators’.

Supplied as a set of three established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon as the blooms start to fade.
Care Information

Planting Advice for Salvia 'Hot Lips':

  • Salvias grow best in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, avoid excessively exposed areas and waterlogged soils.
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.
  • When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the rootball.
The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Water in well to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.

Aftercare advice for Hot Lips:

  • Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established.
  • Although perennial, this Hot Lips will require some winter protection outdoors in the form of a straw mulch and if growing it in containers, move to a cold greenhouse or conservatory to prevent the cold from penetrating to the roots.
  • In spring, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Pruning Advice for Salvia:

  • Prune lightly in late spring when new growth appears to remove dead stems and to maintain a bushy shape
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
