Red Baron is a wonderful variety that will give you a heavy crop of gorgeous deep red onions with striking red rimmed white flesh. It has a good strong flavour and is great used raw in a salad. They store well over winter too!

It's easy to grow your own tasty onions when you start by planting onion sets. 'Sets' are tiny onions grown from seed which when replanted in spring just carry on growing, giving delicious bulb onions which are ready for lifting in early autumn. It works perfectly and is the chosen method of most professional growers.

Care Information

How to grow onions

  • Plant the onion sets from February until April, 3cm deep and 12cm apart and water well.
  • Weed regularly and water during particularly dry spells.
  • Harvest from August, when the leaves begin to turn yellow.
  • Lift with a fork, remove the leaves and allow to dry for a couple of days in the sun.
  • The onions can be stored for several months.
