Description
There's something truly magical about those first bright blooms of spring. Forsythia 'Mikador' is one of the best ways to welcome in the new season. Known fondly as the Easter Tree, this compact flowering shrub puts on a dazzling display just as winter starts to loosen its grip, smothering bare stems in cheerful, sunshine-yellow flowers.
'Mikador' isn't just any Forsythia. It's a newer, smaller, and smarter variety that's been bred for modern gardens. Growing to just around a metre tall and wide, it's perfect for those who want the flower power of traditional forsythias but without the size or the fuss.
As one of the first plants to bloom each year, it looks spectacular when little else is showing colour, and its bare stems, covered top to toe in golden flowers, make a superb cut display. A few branches in a vase at Easter are enough to bring the outside in and instantly lift the mood.
And after flowering? 'Mikador' keeps on performing. Mid-green leaves take over in summer before turning warm shades of orange and gold in autumn, so you're getting far more than just a flash-in-the-pan spring plant.
It's incredibly hardy, tolerant of most soils including heavy clay, and copes with sun or light shade.
Top Tips
- For the best flowers, feed and water Forsythia plants regularly until fully established.
- Must be pruned after flowering to allow the new branches to grow as it is these that will flower the following year on old wood.
Care Information
- In late spring after flowering has finished, prune by cutting back all flowered shoots to a healthy pair of leaves.
- Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant after pruning.
- Container grown plants will need an annual dressing with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser combined with regular watering.
- On established Forsythia plants, cut back up to a fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to encourage robust new growth and to improve flowering.
