Description

Bring vibrant greenery and fresh flavour to your garden with 'grow-your-own' chives - a versatile and aromatic addition to any herb collection. These hardy perennials are easy to grow and deliver a continuous supply of delicate, onion-flavoured leaves.

Chives are a culinary essential, with long, slender leaves adding a mild onion flavour to salads, soups, omelettes, and more. Their striking purple pom-pom flowers aren’t just decorative - they’re edible too, bringing a peppery punch to your dishes. Plus, these flowers are pollinator magnets, attracting bees and butterflies to support a healthy, thriving garden ecosystem.

Thriving in sunny or partially shaded spots, chives grow well in beds, borders, and containers. Their clump-forming habit adds structure and greenery to your garden, while their resilience means they return year after year with minimal effort.

These chives are not just versatile and delicious - they’re also incredibly easy to care for. Simply plant in well-drained soil, water regularly, and harvest the leaves as needed. With regular trimming, your plants will produce lush new growth, ensuring a steady supply of herbs throughout the growing season.

Supplied as six plug plants.

Top Tips
  • Begin harvesting once the plants are well established, typically 4-6 weeks after planting.
  • Use sharp scissors to snip leaves, starting from the outer edges of the plant.
  • Leave at least 5cm of growth at the base to allow the plant to regrow.
  • Avoid harvesting more than one-third of the plant at once to ensure it remains productive.
Care Information
  • Plant chives in spring or early summer after the last frost has passed.
  • Chives thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Choose moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
  • Loosen the soil and remove weeds. Mix in well-rotted compost to enrich the area.
  • Space plug plants 15-20cm apart to allow room for growth.
  • Dig a hole slightly larger than the plug, place the plant inside, and gently firm the soil around it.
  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting to help the roots establish.

Growing in containers:

  • Use a pot at least 20cm in diameter or group several plants in a larger container.
  • Fill with multi-purpose compost mixed with grit for improved drainage.
  • Position the plugs, leaving space between each plant, and water well.

Caring:

  • Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Adjust frequency during hot, dry spells.
  • Feed every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser to promote healthy growth.
  • Trim back flower stems once they finish blooming to encourage new leaf growth. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain plant health.
  • Divide clumps every 2-3 years in spring to prevent overcrowding and encourage fresh growth. Simply lift the plant, split the clump into smaller sections, and replant.

Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
