Product Information

Bamboos are some of the most easily recognisable of all garden plants, all having vertical, architectural stems, also known as culms, and long, narrow leaves that look wonderful as they sway in the breeze, creating a gentle rustling sound.

There are over 1,500 identified species of Bamboo, some just a few centimetres tall, with the largest, Dendrocalamus sinicus growing to and incredible 40m (130ft) tall with culms 20cm (1ft) in diameter, quite something when you remember that Bamboo is actually a grass! Our collection comprises three wonderful varieties in striking colours that will look great planted individually and spectacular grouped together. This are running varieties, but they’re easy to keep under control by regular trimming or by surrounding the roots with a barrier. Alternatively grow them in pots buried in the ground, or as eye-catching specimens or a terrace or balcony. Taking 10 years to reach their maximum size if left to their own devices, these make ideal screening plants.

All three of these Bamboos are holders of the coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Supplied as a collection of 3 established plants in 3L pots, ready for planting, including:

Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) - This gorgeous bamboo’s canes turn a rich, coffee-black as they grow, contrasting wonderfully with the bright green foliage. Perfect as an instant-impact feature, or an eye-catching screen, and slow growing too, eventually reaching a maximum height and spread of 4m (13ft).

Yellow Bamboo (Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Spectabilis’) - Long, slender, golden-yellow stems that form delightful zigzag patterns as they grow, together with splendid green leaves – a gorgeous bamboo for any garden! Ideal for screening a shed or dividing areas in your garden, growing to 8m (26ft) tall and 4m (13ft) wide.

Green Bamboo (Phyllostachys bissetii) - The very best green bamboo there is, ‘Bisset’s Bamboo’ has risen to popularity in the last few years as it one of the easiest, cleanest and most straightforward to grow, with simple, classic green foliage and stems. Ideal for hedges or screening, reaching a height and spread of 5m (16ft).

Top Tips

  • The hollow canes can be harvested to provide support for other plants in your garden.
  • Remove flower spikes to discourage further blooms as bamboos don't recover well after flowering.
  • Trim off the lower leaves so that the beautiful stems can be admired.

Care Information

  • Plant in moist but well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or part shade in a sheltered or exposed location. If planting more than one, allow at least 100cm distance between them to allow room to spread.
  • Bamboos do well in large containers, but if you plant in the garden, consider placing a physical barrier around the roots to stop them invading surrounding areas.
  • Apply a liquid fertiliser in spring and mulch in winter to protect the roots.
  • Bamboos can grows vigorously, so prune canes at the base regularly to prevent them from spreading further than desired.
  • In the spring, unwanted or spindly canes should be cut down to ground level. New shoots can also be pruned once they grow taller than the rest of the plant if you wish to maintain a compact size.
