Product Information

Sweetly scented flowers drift across the deep evergreen foliage of this exceptional shrub. This compact and rounded variety, also known as Pittosporum tobira, remains coated in leather-feel, glossy green leaves regardless of the season, stretching to a good size with dense coverage.

Just wait until that sweet spot around the tail end of spring and early summer, when days are notably lengthening and warming up – this shrub erupts with beauty, as dainty cream flowers gather in clusters, releasing a honey-like aroma that sits on the breeze. The flowers even evolve in colour across the weeks, taking on a yellow tinge.

This Asian native is best grown in a greenhouse border or container, so it can be given protection from autumn onwards. The thick foliage even makes it perfect for topiary clipping.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come.

Supplied as an established plant in a 5L pot, roughly 60-80cm tall, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Prune in mid-spring. Take a close look at the outline of the foliage and remove any vigorous shoots that are starting to sprout out.

Care Information

  • Nursery pot-grown Pittosporum can be planted at any time of the year, but best in either autumn or spring. Do not plant in winter if the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
  • Plant in either full sun or partial shade, offering shelter from cold winds, thriving in most well-drained soil conditions.

To plant:

  • Dig a planting hole three times wider than the roots and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once in place.
  • We've found a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle around the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown nursery plants thoroughly and allow them to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots to help the plant to establish quicker.
  • Place in the hole at the same level as it was supplied in the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones, or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
  • Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.
