Description

Flat borders do not stand a chance with this trio! West Country Lupins lift cottage gardens and borders with colour and those unmistakable towering blooms.

Together, these three deliver tall flower spires in rich red, sumptuous plum-purple and striking yellow-purple bicolour, rising above fresh green foliage in early summer.

West Country Lupins are celebrated for their strong growth, long-lasting blooms and ability to bring proper structure to mixed planting. Use this collection through the middle or back of a border.

Plus, these fully hardy perennials return in future seasons, for repeat displays rather than one summer of impact. They suit cottage garden schemes, wildlife-friendly borders, cut flower patches and any planting area that need a bit of a lift!

Supplied as a set of three established plants in 9cm pots, including one each of the following varieties:

  • Lupin 'Beefeater': A commanding West Country Lupin with strong early summer spires, richly coloured flowers and delicate yellow flecking. Reaches around 90cm tall, making it superb for adding height and presence to the middle or back of borders
  • Lupin 'Masterpiece': Deep plum-purple flower spikes are sparked with fiery orange flecks for a sumptuous, designer-style colour effect. This scented variety flowers for around eight weeks, reaches around 75cm tall and cuts beautifully for vase displays
  • Lupin 'Manhattan Lights': Bright yellow and deep purple bicolour spires create one of the most dramatic contrasts in the range. Reaching around 85cm tall, this fully hardy perennial is good for pollinators and brings striking vertical impact to borders and large patio pots
Top Tips
  • The secret to success with Lupins is to leave them alone. They don’t like being vigorously pruned or cut back, so only remove flower spikes once they have faded to encourage further blooming and don’t allow any seed pods to develop.
  • Easy to look after, just keep an eye out for slugs, and leave foliage to die back naturally in the autumn.
Care Information

Planting Advice for Lupins:

  • Lupins prefer to be grown in full sun with some afternoon shade to protect them from the heat of hot, midday sun. Grow in any soil as long as it is free draining and rich in organic matter.
  • Pot-grown Lupins can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen.
  • Dig a planting hole three times the width of the roots and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the plant is in place.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown plants thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove your Lupin from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice for your Lupins:

  • Water well and regularly for the first few months.
  • Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds.
  • Apply a generous layer of mulch around the base of the plant after planting and thereafter annually to keep the roots cool.
  • Lupins are nitrogen fixers, storing Nitrogen in specially adapted root nodules so don't need specialist feeding.

Pruning Advice for Lupins:

  • Lupins don’t like being vigorously pruned or cut back, so only remove flower spikes once they have faded to encourage further blooming and don’t allow any seed pods to develop.
  • Leave foliage to die back naturally in the autumn.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
