Description

A hedging treat! Evergreen and tough, with year-round colour that evolves with age, plus immensely aromatic autumn flowers.

See year-round interest, with evergreen foliage joined by incredibly fragrant creamy-white blooms, which break the mould and emerge in autumn, followed by orange berries in spring. Dark green leaves boast silvery spots and speckles at first, evolving with age to a rich green, but always silver on the undersides.

This shade-tolerant variety thrives as a hedge or can be grown in a border where it will provide a foil for other colourful flowers and perennials.

Relatively fast growing, at a rate of 30-50cm each year, with just a simple trim to shape needed in autumn. Also fast to establish and low maintenance, needing little attention once planted.

Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. This variety is also recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators'.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Tolerant of dry soil or salt-laden coastal winds.
Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Grow in full sun, whether exposed or sheltered.
  • Dig a planting hole three times the width of existing roots and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as new roots, once they reach the edges, tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole, whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown hedges thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your hedge in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed, in a process called backfilling.
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare advice:

  • Keep plants well-watered while they establish.
  • Hardy in winter conditions down to -15C, protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to young plants.

Pruning Advice:

  • Give it a good tidy in late summer by cutting back any long or misplaced shoots. Any green-leaved shoots can be removed, cut right back to the plant.
Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
