Product Information

A true garden marvel – Cotinus Magical Torch produces impressive and showy performances that are certainly worth taking a second glance at.

Commonly known as a Smoke Bush, this large, bushy shrub boasts delightful green foliage through spring and summer, which darkens to a seasonal shade of yellow, orange, and red when autumn rolls around.

However, it is the billowing plumes of pink blooms that erupt from the foliage that really demand attention, bringing a smattering of soft candy floss-like flowers that seem to float above summertime beds and borders.

A real garden treat – the nectar-rich blooms are particularly loved by pollinators, attracting bees and butterflies.

Plant this unique bush throughout the garden for a game-changing display, including beds, borders, and pots, to enjoy ample ground cover.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting.

Top Tips

To encourage better leaves at the expense of flowers, cut back in late spring, although ensure that your cotinus is well established before hard pruning.

Care Information

Planting Advice for Cotinus:

  • Best grown in well-draining soil in full sun or partial shade
  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare advice for Cotinus:

  • Water regularly until established.
  • After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.

Pruning Advice for Cotinus:

  • Cotinus is easy to maintain needing just an occasional light trim to encourage new growth.
  • Plants can be pruned back hard in March if required to enhance the display and size of the foliage.
