What Is Supplied

Item 510157 supplied as:
Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot, ready to pot on or plant out.

Top Tips

  • Your magnolia requires little pruning other than to maintain its shape and remove damaged or crossing stems. Do this as soon as possible after flowering to keep the flower buds for the following year.
  • When planting, choose your site carefully as magnolias dislike being moved.
  • Magnolia plants establish more quickly when their roots are shaded, so apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost after planting, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.

Care Information

  • Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi-shaded position with protection from cold winds and spring frosts.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil, so incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, or dig in ericaceous compost if you know your soil to be more alkaline.
  • Before planting, water your potted plant well.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level as the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling). Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the rootball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel or bark.
  • Mulch each spring with well-rotted manure or leaf mould.
  • Prune in mid-summer when in full leaf to maintain shape and height and ensure that there is plenty of time for new buds to grow for next year's flowering.
