Product Information

Also known as the Strawflower or the Everlasting flower, this daisy-like plant is related to Helychrysums - a popular cottage garden plant that is enjoying a bit of a comeback. The attention-grabbing flowers are what makes this garden annual so unusual and what gave it the name of 'everlasting flower' - you really must grow them to see what the fuss is all about!

As the big, intensely yellow blooms of Granvia Gold mature, they develop a deep orange centre giving the plant a bright golden glow. But that's not its most unusual feature - if you touch the petals, you'll be amazed to find that the actually feel like paper!

Compact and easy to grow, these bushy annuals make perfect container plants - ideal for brightening up patios and balconies as they can be moved wherever you want them.

Easy to grow and great for filling gaps in borders, they provide long lasting colour and make an excellent cut flower, lasting for weeks - even months if you hang a bunch up to dry for a couple of weeks after picking.

Supplied as 6 x plug plants, ready to grow on before planting out. Plants reach H50cm (20in) x W50cm (20in).

Care Information

Planting Advice for your Xerochrysum:

  • Unpack plugs immediately and stand them in water for an hour.
  • If you can’t do this, they can sit in their mini greenhouse for a week if upright and not too wet.
  • Plugs may be slightly dry or yellow after being in a dark box in the post, but they’ll quickly recover.
  • Put them somewhere warm, light and airy such as a windowsill or greenhouse.
  • Pot up Xerochrysum plugs and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions until all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, plant them where they are to flower - again when all risk of frost has passed.
  • When potting on, handle plugs carefully. Pot on using our 9cm pots in Shuttle Trays, using good multi-purpose compost.
  • Give your plants a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.
  • Plant approx. 20cm (8in) apart to allow them room to grow.
  • Feed using a high-potash feed such as Blooming Fast Superior Soluble Fertiliser for Flowers & Fruits, to encourage flowering.
  • Dead head when flowers fade to encourage more flowers.
  • Remember that plants are frost tender and should be protected from frost at all times.

Aftercare Advice for your Everlasting flowers:

  • Xerochrysum can tolerate some partial shade, but if you're looking for the maximum blooms on compact plants then best results are achieved when grown in full sun where they can get at least 6-8 hours of light.
  • Plants prefer moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and so if you grow them in containers, choose a potting mix designed for use in pots.
  • Water them regularly but take care not to overwater and this can cause root problems and fewer blooms.

Pruning advice:

  • No pruning is needed.
