Description

Imagine stepping into your garden and plucking ripe, juicy figs straight from your own tree. Our Sicilian Fig, Ficus carica, brings this delight to your doorstep. This mini standard tree is compact and ideal for those limited on space, reaching a manageable height and spread.

Lush, lobed leaves provide certain Mediterranean flair, transforming patios, balconies, or garden beds into a verdant retreat. The tree's smooth, grey bark adds year-round interest, making it a standout feature even during the dormant seasons.

Come late summer to early autumn, anticipate a generous yield of sweet figs. These fruits are not only delectable fresh from the tree but also enhance a variety of dishes, from salads to desserts. Their rich flavour and unique texture make them a favourite among home gardeners and culinary enthusiasts alike.

The Sicilian Fig thrives in the UK's climate, especially when positioned in a sunny, sheltered spot. It's well-suited for container growing, allowing you to move it to a greenhouse or conservatory during colder months, ensuring protection from severe frosts.

Supplied as an established mini standard tree in an 18cm pot, approximately 60-80cm tall, ready to plant.

Top Tips
  • Restrict the root growth of all figs by growing in pots on patio, or planting the pots into ground
  • Keep well watered when fruits swell up

    Planting Advice for Fig Trees

    • Pot-grown plants can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen. If in doubt, err towards spring but remember to keep pots well-watered so that the soil does not dry out.
    • Roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting, and mix some well rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once in place.
    • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
    • Before planting soak container-grown plants thoroughly and allow them to drain.
    • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
    • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
    • Place in the hole at the same level at the pot.
    • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
    • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
    • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
    • Alternatively plant in a large container filled with good qulaity, soil-based compost.

    Aftercare Advice for Figs:

    • If you’re planting in spring or summer, water well and regularly for the first few months.
    • Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons.

    Pruning Advice for Figs:

    • This standard tree should be pruned to keep its shape and size. When pruning, aim for a balanced top that allows light into the centre of the canopy.
    • Prune twice a year:
Early spring: remove any branches that spoil the shape, or any that are crossing or damaged, along with any suckers appearing from the ground or lower stem. If needed cut back one or two branches that have become too long and bare to a 5cm (2in) stub to stimulate new growth from the base of the branch.
Early summer: pinch out the new growth at five or six leaves. Do not prune later growth.
    Delivery Information

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. Pre-ordered items will be sent as soon as possible after the date quoted and we'll generally ship your entire order with your pre-ordered items. When your order is dispatched, we'll send you another email with details of how to track it.

Most orders are sent on a fully-tracked courier service with Yodel. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, no signature is required, and our courier is asked to leave your order in a safe place on your property.

We'll send a tracking link when we dispatch your order, so you know when its due to arrive. Please note, once delivered we cannot be held responsible for loss or theft from your property. If you have any specific delivery instructions, please let us know - there's an option to enter a short message for the courier at the checkout.

Smaller, lighter, single-item orders may be sent through the post with Royal Mail - in which case no tracking is available.

Our experienced nursery team will always send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive when you plant them, so although most plants are very tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme frosts or heatwaves, we avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme weather is forecast, or over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please note, we cannot guarantee delivery on a certain day or time. Delivery to outlying postcode areas may take 1-2 days longer, dependent on your location.
